iSCSI target issues - iSNS, management, functionality etc.

Some related iSCSI target questions.

1. Using Server Manager - File and Storage Servers - iSCSI, I've added an iSCSI virtual disk and created an iSCSI target that points to it. I also have the iSNS role running, which supports iSCSI target discovery. I have other (non-Microsoft) software targets using iSNS.

But how do I register the Microsoft iSCSI target with the iSNS server? This looks like it was possible with the Microsoft iSCSI software target v3.3: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg232638(v=ws.10).aspx. I can't find registering with iSNS servers anywhere in the iSCSI UI under Server 2012 RC.

2. There doesn't seem to be a way of managing iSCSI targets that don't have any iSCSI disks configured from the UI. If you delete all iSCSI virtual disks for a target (but don't delete the target), those iSCSI targets no longer show up in the iSCSI targets part of the UI.

3. Is there a way of attaching a real physical (not virtual) pass through disk to an iSCSI target? The Starwind iSCSI target allows this.

4. Is it possible to connect to an iSCSI target on the same server? It doesn't seem to work - I get "Connection Failed". The Starwind iSCSI target allows this.

The v3.3 target didn't allow this per http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverfiles/thread/d202f326-092b-4783-85b7-cdeb7240bedb/. But is this limitation still in place for the built-in 2012 target?

This is needed when you need iSCSI to allow multiple cluster hosts to connect to the same target for shared storage (e.g. for a cluster), and one of those cluster hosts also need to host the iSCSI software target. This is the case when you have a limited number of physical servers.

Unable to install .Net 3.5 on Windows Server 8 Beta

I am done with the all new and Amazing Windows Server 8 Beta in my lab. Its truly powerful than its predecessors. However I am trying to install earlier applications which needs .Net 3.5, where I am facing difficulty in installing it.

I found an article related to it for Windows 8:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w8itproinstall/thread/f4217b5c-4341-4c6a-99be-46a178b34132

But I tried to install it by double-clicking on the file from Desktop, which failed stating "Need to be installed using Server Manager"(which is common even in earlier Server OS)

I get an event ID in Setup Logs:

Event ID: 11; Source: Servicing

Description: Update NetFx3 of Package Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 failed to be turned on. Status: 0x800f0906.

I also tried to give a source of the file to install, but it failed.

I am able to install ADDS, DNS and IIS Services. But only this, which it failed. Please advise.

Thanks in advance.

Storage spaces: need to be able to automatically select the maximum possible size for virtual disks using fixed provisioning

$

In the Storage Spaces UI, you can specify "create maximum sized available" on creating a new fixed provisioning virtual disk with the new virtual disk wizard.

However, either when using the UI to extend an existing virtual disk, or when using PowerShell, you need to specify an exact size (e.g. 3248GB). You can't choose "use all available space".

So right now, in each of these two situations, setting the maximum possible size is a matter of iterative guesswork, needing many attempts to create or extend the virtual disk until the point at which it fails.

This is important as you often want to ensure that Fixed volumes use all available pool space. Fixed provisioning is important so that you are aware in daily use how much remaining space you have available on the disk, and don't unexpectedly run out of pool space. Thin volumes don't really work well in this use case.

Volume on 6 TB

I am trying to make a drive on 6.36 TB placed on 3 disks. (2x 3 TB and 1x 1TB) but I cannot make it larger than what can be placed on one disk.

When I want to make a Virtual drive I cannot make it larger than one disk 2.72 TB even when the storage pool have 6.36 available.

Are there any limitation to how large volumes you can make in the RC or what might I do wrong?

Change Installation Source Path

I have made an installation of the Windows Server 2012 through a mount media (Z: drive) and I can install features if I have the media mounted.

Now I want to make the files available on a network drive and want to change the registry to look default at this network path.

In the old windows version you could change the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\SourcePath to point to the new location.
Where do you define this in Windows 2012?

Server 2012: Windows Internal Database error during installation

I am using the current RC build.

While trying to install IPAM services, I am prompted to install a Windows Internal Database.

However, setup consistently dies on me with an error that "The operation could not be completed, because the server that you specified requires a restart".

OK, fine. I restart the server and start setup again and I get the error again. Anyone seen this before?

Hi,

When adding drives to an existing pool, is the data from a mirrored space redistributed to use all the drives in the pool?

Scale-Out File Servers

Hi,

have a simple question... When configuring a pair of two Scale-Out File Servers where's actual shared data is located? I mean do they use CSV just to maintain the cluster or does CSV store actual shared data (VHDs for Hyper-V in our case)?

Thanks!

Unable to browse/save to SharePoint libraries using Server 2012 as a client - webdav?

Hello,

When trying to save documents from Office 2010 applications directly to SharePoint 2010, the application returns an error:

"You can't open this location using this program"

which is what used to happen when the webclient service wasn't running on Windows Server 2008/R2 etc. However, I've installed the desktop experience feature and the webclient service is running - what am I missing?

IE enhanced security is off and SharePoint integration is fine with Windows 8 in the same environment.

Thanks

Andy

Storage Spaces: Virtual Disk taken offline during file copy, marked as "This disk is offline because it is out of capacity", but plenty of free space

$

Server 2012 RC. I'm using Storage Spaces, with two virtual disks across 23 underlying physical disks.

* First virtual disk is fixed provisioning, parity across 23 physical disks: 10,024GB capacity
* Second virtual disk is fixed provisioning, parity across the remaining space on 6 of the same physical disks: 652GB capacity

These have been configured as dynamic disks, with an NTFS volume spanned across the two (larger virtual disk first). Total volume size 10,676GB. For more details of the hardware, and why the configuration is like this, see: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserver8gen/thread/c35ff156-01a8-456a-9190-04c7bcfc048e

I'm copying several TB from a network share to this volume. It is very slow at ~12MB/sec, but works. However, three times so far, several hours in to the file copy and with plenty of free space remaining, the 10,024GB virtual disk is suddenly taken offline. This obviously then fails the spanned volume and stops the file copy.

The second time, I took screenshots, below. The disk (Disk27) is marked offline due to "This disk is offline because it is out of capacity". And the disk in the spanned volume is marked as missing (which is what you would expect when one of its member disks is offline).

I can then mark the disk (Disk27) back online again, and this restores the spanned volume. I can then re-start the file copy from where it failed. There doesn't appear to be any data loss, but it does cause an outage that requires manual attention. As you can see, there is plenty of space left on the spanned volume.

Each time this has happened, there are a few event 150 errors in the System event log: "Disk 27 has reached a logical block provisioning permanent resource exhaustion condition.". Source: Disk.

This error seems to be related to thin provisioning of disks. I found this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh848068(v=vs.85).aspx. But both these Virtual Disks are configured as Fixed, not Thin provisioning, so it shouldn't apply.

My thoughts: the virtual disk should not spuriously go offline during a file copy, even if it was out of space. And in any case, there is plenty of free space remaining. Also, I don't understand the reason for why it is marked as offline ("This disk is offline because it is out of capacity"). Why would a disk go offline because it was out of thin capacity, rather than just returning an "out of disk space" error while keeping it online.

New Start menu is slowing me down in Server 8

Microsoft have taken quite a bold move with the Start menu, taking away the old start button and just having the metro Start menu.

I have been playing with Windows Server 8 and Windows 8 consumer preview, there are some very nice features and on the whole i think they have done a nice job.

The only thing that keeps bugging me is the start menu! I can deal with it in Windows 8 although it does slow me down loading that full screen and it can get annoying when your working.

On Windows Server 8 on the other hand it is very very annoying, Microsoft NEED to add an option to turn it off and have the old start menu, at the moment I am just using it on local servers but I can see trying to use it over RDP to remote customer being a nightmare!

I am sure im not the only one thats wants the option to turn off metro and have the old start in Windows Server 8, lets face it, it doesnt do anything special in Server 8. I can understand the use for it in Windows 8 for end users but even that could do with the option to turn it off!

At the moment I feel its just slowing me down and trying to get the mouse down in the bottom left of the screen just to get the start menu

What are the minimum requirements to create a virtual machine to run the new Windows Server 2012 as a Guest?

For instance, can I user Windows Hyper-V Server 2088 R2 as a host?

I have searched for documentation to help on this question but had no luck until now.

Thanks.

I do not need "apps" or a tablet user interface running on my servers. My god this is terrible, and I hope it's removed before RTM...

dotNet 4 damaged - how to repair it ?

$

I had a Windows Server 2012 RC running just fine.

One day it didnt boot, "a device is missing...". Booting into a recovery command prompt, showed no files on the system drive. CHKDSK recovered files, and it booted again. But damaged....:

Somehow dotNet 4 i damaged. I cannot start server manager, MMCs, powershell, etc. A messagebox is popping up, stating that dotNet4 i damaged and have to be reinstalled. Now since it is a Feature I cannot run the ordinary dotnet installer - it has to be done by ServerManager (which dosn't start - since dotnet is damaged)

Using DISM, I found that "NetFX4" and "NetFX4ServerFeatures" are Enabled. So I try to Disable it with DISM, which fails with a "a file is missing - error:2"

I cannot start a remote powershell against the server, I cannot manage it remotely with ServerManager.

So I'm stuck....

Please advice how to "reinstall" "recover" "repair" dot Net 4.

regards,

nikolaj
