Setting up RemoteApps from Win8 via VDI
Setting up VDI on WS2012 I can load a Win7 template VM and add RemoteApps just fine, but if I load up a Win8RP template VM I get the error:
To Populate the list of RemoteApp programs, the following requirements must be met on the virtual desktop:
1. The currently logged on user must be a member of the Administrators group on the virtual desktop.
2. The virtual desktop must be available on the network.
Exception: Unable to retrieve RemoteApp programs for the Start menu.
I can RDP into all of the Win8 VDI machines and verified both domain admins and my personal domain account are both in the administrators group on the machine. I assume this is some sort of bug, possibly related to the removal of all the start menu hooks for Metro? There also seems to be some sort of bug with the Win8 sysprep as it doesn't delete the existing user profiles like the Win7 sysprep does.
I haven't been able to find any sort of blog or other posts on implementing VDI on WS2012 past publishing the VMs, nothing I've found has gone on to publishing RemoteApps as well.
Features Removed or Deprecated in Windows Server 2012
VT
Can't activate RAID or ACHI in bios after server2012 installed.
Usually you can change some regedit keys and then just change it in bios and it works.
Server2012 seems to have diff reg keysor something else?
I installed the server when the bios wasnt in achi or raid. Can someone help me change it without it blue screening?
OpenGL not working
Hi,
A program that uses OpenGL will NOT render if the "Aero" theme is DISABLED ("classic" is used), but WILL render if the "Aero" theme is enabled.
I don't want to use Aero engine. How do I get OpenGL to render without having Aero turned on?
Middleschool setup.. help please.
Hello community!
I am seeking assistance to help me understand servers better, strictly for future use and knowledge purposes.
In this case I am using a desktop for now, and everything seems functional after installation besides the fact* that
the Ethernet only gives me "Local only".
What I plan to do with this server is to create users/ desktops & laptops to be able to access and run from a Domain.
For example, instead of making user accounts on every windows 7 laptop and desktop they could remote connect to the
server with their user log in to the server domain.
I strictly need guidelines, as the videos on YouTube vary, and need a thorough lead on what steps to take. I have Linux,
Unix, and regular Windows edition experience. None with servers, so hopefully I could pass on support here too someday.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read.
Using - Windows Server 2008 R2
[W2K12] - Show OS Boot-Information
Hey Guys,
just a short question:
In my Windows Server 2012 configuration-script, I set the following two options:
bcdedit /set{current}bootlog yes
bcdedit /set{current}sos on
Both options are then enabled in the "msconfig" screen.
Also, the "bootlog" works fine - The logfile is written to "C:\Windows\ntbtlog.txt".
But the problem is, that the "sos" option which should show the drivers loaded during startup / boot are not shown on the screen...
Any ideas?
I've also tested the following:
- Activating the sos option vie GUI (msconfig) and rebooting
- Tested it in a virtual machine (vSphere 5.0)
- Tested it in a virtual machine (Oracle VirtualBox)
- Tested it on a physical machine (non UEFI)
Thank you

About Deployment Windows Server 2012
This is my first time on this board and im writing you to request some recommendations to deploy Windows Server 2012 with some features as requeriments from the company where im working.
I have to deploy Windows Server 2012 from the begining, so this is an advantage because i could do the planning carefully following best practices and considerations for the case. The requeriments to deploy are: Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, File Server, Remote Desktop, WSUS. Basically those six ones.
Scenario One
I have thought to do a deployment 3 server for these requeriments. The first one, only Active Directory. I would not like mix active directory with Remote Desktop or File Server for instance. The second One for DHCP, DNS and WSUS. For the last one, the rest of services, RDP & File Server. The licences here must be Windows Server 2012 Standart Edition because im not going to deploy a virtualization enviroment, at least from the beginning.
Until here i think everything is ok. I would like to hear some considerations about how to mix services without to be compromised to stay long time offline if one of services fails in any moment
Scenario two
Well, as the same way i thought that plan, i've thought in a licence datacenter from windows server 2012. It will allow me add a new role (hyper v) for virtualize those machine. So I will be acquiring two Datacenter licences. The first licence for production server and inside of it, will be running hyper v with those 3 server exposed above. And the second one is for to have a replica from the first one. If the production server fails i have how to fix the situation with the backup server. The same way happens with the services, if active directory or dns has serious problems, i got how to fix it without to be long time offline.
These are the two scenarios that i've thought. I'd like to ask you recommendations, best practices, considerations that i could be forgotten at the moment of the planning. If you think in a third scenario i will be glad for read you. Just let me know what are you thinking about exposed above.
Best Regards
Windos Server 2012 / Windows 8 service problem
Hello to all
I spent a lot of time to fix this.

SMB3.0 effectively not working
I'm have a quite peculiar and highly frustrating problem.
I have recently set up a Windows Server 2012 file host, sitting on top of kvm, using virtio drivers and a PCI-E passthrough HBA (debian host).
Performance is great internally, and I get great download speeds from the network shares (essentially full disk/network speed).
However I have found that the two Windows 8 Pro desktops that I have connected to the domain (separate Windows 2012 server on the same KVM) effectively cannot upload files to the server.
They either immediately drop their speed to 1kb/s or spend forever "calculating". I tested uploading from a Windows 7 VM on my MBP and the upload speed are perfect.
I'm beginning to think that something isn't right with SMB 3.0? (as that would only effect the Windows 8/Windows Server 2012 combination). I have tried playing with a few of the network adapter settings (disabling offloads/checksums) with no difference.
Network adapter drivers are all up-to-date on both server and client.
It looks like it's going to be a setting on the server somewhere as I'm happy with the speeds between two Windows 8 Pro machines (which will also be using SMB3.0)
Upgrade path for Server 2012 eval Standard, running AD DS to Licensed Standard, without having to blow it away and run setup!
OK, I have the 2012 (eval) up and running, meets all suitability testing. Now I want to put it into production with the license key received.
But we cannot change the key from eval to licensed on a domain controller. According to <http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj574204.aspx> And of course it's true, we cannot install the key on an existing dc.
SO, can I install a 2nd eval server,
join it into the domain,
remove AD DS from the 1st eval server,
then install the key on the 1st (configured) eval server, (putting it into production)
then put AD DS role back on this production server? Keeping all the Domain & app setup, not having to rebuild all the detail!
(Then remove the 2nd eval instance from the domain).
windows 2012 server manager refresh failed.
system log:
the value for smserverid must be a vaild ip address,FQDN,or NetBIOS name.
thx.
Vpn & DNS Server issues
Hi All,
I am not an expert on server setup and since we are a small company I am setting up our own infrastructure.
so far my company has one server(2003) and around 20 fixed computers and 10 mobile computers. We have a fixed IP-Address and a router with NAT.
To provide our users with remote access we have been using Terminal server and open the required port from the router.
Past few days I have been setting up Server 2012 and will deploy once ready. This time I have configure remote-access with VPN. So far I have been able to get the PPTP vpn up and running. The server is also running DNS Server, DHCP Server.
There are two problems I am facing.
1. When I connect from VPN, the DNS Server addresses are those of the ISP. Is there a way for the client to pick the server IP as the default DNS.
*(My DHCP Scope option has been set to point to Server)
2. The DHCP does not register the clients with the DNS.
I have followed all the recomendation and enabled DNS Dynamic updates + Always Dynamically update DNS A records + Allowed secure and unsecure dynamic updates in the DNS Server settings)
Ultimately we want to host a small intranet site, which users can open after connecting via VPN, and remote desktop to a bunch of computer that host various software.
Sever 2012 Core Fails installing KB2798897 from WSUS with Error 0x80070643
Hi,
as evident by the title one of my Server 2012 core machines (in fact the hyper-v Host) failes to install the Root Certificate Update (KB2798897)
It tries every night but always fails with the following error:
"Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Update for Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 (KB2798897)."
Any ideas?
PS: I would also be content if someone could tell me how I can install rvkroots.exe manually on a server core installation.
BSOD using Client for NFS on Windows Server 2012 Standard
As it says, when trying to mount an NFS share on the server I get a BSOD. Reproduced with 3 different server makes (IBM, HP and Acer).

incomming VPN Connection - Error 720
Hello,
I'm new at Server 2012 Standard-edition (V-Server).
Since several days I'm trying to establish a VPN-Connection to this server.
My latest problem ist error 720 when trying to connect.
Google told me that it could be a problem with protocols.
Where do I find the protocols, used at server-side?
Thanks Carsten
Windows 8 Print Spooler goes off line
I’m sure some of you have run into this, but it is a strange problem and we have been seeing more of them. The printer driver in general are pretty solid. They just work.
About 2 months ago, we are finding that “some” Windows 8 machine printers drivers are going off line. Does not matter if you uninstall all of the drivers, and re-install them, they will print some pages then go off line. Printers installed - HP Laser Jet 200 MFP and an older dell 5200n (Lexmark). Works fine on Windows 7 and other Windows 8 machines (and all updates are in place)
So to collect feedback (do not suggest to restart services, or set printer to off line/on line mode). The problem is the printer spooler just stops (no error message no log information). The spooler does not have to be used by a print job, just goes off line. There are “new” HP drivers installed and older dell printer drivers installed. My guess is that it is an HP problem with Windows 8, but I thought I would throw it out to the community and collect your feedback
Suggestions as to what would cause this or how to trouble shoot it?

forms authentication is locked and read only
Hi, using Windows Server 2012 and IIS 8
Trying to use forums authentication, but when i go to switch it on it says "This feature has been locked and is read only"
Not sure how to solve it. Only happens in sub folders of the WWWROOT directory.
