Remote Desktop Connection Stuck On "Configuring remote session..."

Hello all.

I have a problem that I have tried to solve many ways, but I cannot find an answer.

When I open the Remote Desktop Connection Application on my Windows 7 computer, attempting to access a copy of Windows 8 Enterprise in a Hyper-V virtual machine with RemoteFx, it hangs on "Configuring remote session..."

If I attempt to access the VM from the Server's Remote Desktop Connection Application, It hangs on "Estimating connection quality..."

I've attempted reinstating Windows 8 Enterprise on the VM, as well as update my video card drivers.

Server Specs

  • i7-2600k
  • NVIDIA 560TI
  • 8GB RAM
  • 400GB HDD

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

How to change logon / lock screen?

In Windows 8 you go to the right charm bar, click settings, the click change pc settings.  You're then able to customize the logon and lock screen.

In Server 2012, the change pc settings button is missing.  Is there a way to get to these settings?

SkyDrive documents all Read Only

I've just installed SkyDrive on my 2012 Server (used purely for learning/evaluation at this stage) and all of the documents (word 2010, excel 2010, text) are Read Only when I open them. None of them have the Read Only file attribute.

What feature of Server 2012 is causing this? How do I stop it?

thanks

This is dumb, I'm sure, but I can't find anywhere in the Help of W2012 Server on what is the replacement for Export for VMs.

Can somebody point me in the right direction?

ReFS Partition Mount Points

Whether Volume Management Functions such as FindFirstVolumeMountPoint are still supported for Windows 2012 server.

Since the function FindFirstVolumeMountPoint doesn't return the Mounts points for ReFS partitions though it supports the FILE_SUPPORTS_REPARSE_POINTS.

Hyper-V server core 2012 and Storage pool for a Windows 2012 guest

Hi

I've already made a topic for this while the beta went out:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/fr-FR/winserver8gen/thread/2c29fa7f-0e48-4b2f-bcd3-7ee838b0c6e9

Seems that nobody was able to answer the issue, so I waited for the final release of Win2012 and the release of Hyper-V server core based on 2012 server to make a new try... which failed as early on!

This is the story:

- Setting up a Hyper-V server core 2012 as the Host
- Installation of Windows 2012 server as a guest
- Using HDD passtrought for the guest to let it access directly to the physical drives
- Setting up a storage pool under the guest OS on the drive that are passed through

So far so good until them everything work fine. The storage pool is OK, etc.

The issue:

- Reboot the host
=> Guest is unable to load, missing SCSi device.

Looking closer: no more disk seen with Diskpart on the Host => Hyper-V Manager doesn't see it and is unable to pass-through it to the Guest.

Seems that the way storage pool is working bypass totally the disk management of the system.
Actually if I plug the drive in my Windows8 desktop, I immediately get the storage space working, without any notification, indication or something asking me if I want to "import" or "use" the storage pool detected on the drive.

I really don't get how Microsoft can let this appends. There's a big failure here. This means that it's properly impossible to use Storage pool on a hyper-V server core Guest.

There's should be a way to say on the host "do not use the storage pool detected - keep passtrough the drive"
Damn Pass-trough as to be and stay pass-trough whatever is written on the disk !! If the host is unable to make real pass-through like this, it's a big fail.

And as I use Hyper-V Server Core, I'm not able to set a storage pool on the host, and using it as a drive on the guest (by the way this is something I doesn't want, I want my guest to manage their own storage space, the host is only here to run the hypervisor)

If someone as an idea to manage this issue, it would be great. I really want to use storage pool, but for now it's totally impossible.

Thanks

Skipping the NewUI after Dekstop Experience Feature is installed...

Hello,

after installing the Desktop Experience Feature in Windows Server 2012 RTM, my System shows the NewUI instead of the Desktop after logging on to the server.

How can I switch back to the "normal" behavior of the Server e.g. logging on to the desktop?

I know this question has been asked several times and the answer always was "this is not possible". However, there has to be a way, because without the desktop expirience installed the server is logging on to the desktop and not the NewUI. ;-)

If you wonder why I install the desktop experience and then do not want to have the NewUI: I just want to have the ability to mount ISO/VHD files via Explorer. This is only available if you install desktop experience... :-(

Storage Spaces - Remove Physical Disk from Simple layout

$

I am running Server 2012 RTM with a single storage pool containing 4 drives - 2.73TB, 1.36TB, 465GB and 148GB. There is a single virtual disk created, with thin provisioning, using the Simple layout, with a current maximum size of 2.73TB, and with 1.32TB allocated. I want to remove the 148GB drive and replace it with a 465GB drive. When I right-click the 148GB disk and select Remove, I get a warning that Windows will attempt to rebuild any virtual disks that store data on the disk I'm trying to remove, and that in order to succeed, the storage pool must have enough free space to accommodate the data from the disk I'm trying to remove. There is more than enough space in the virtual disk to accommodate whatever files may be stored on the 148GB disk - over 1TB unallocated. However, when I confirm that I want to remove the disk from the pool, I get the following message:

This physical disk is used by one or more virtual disks that use the Simple (no resiliency) layout. To remove this physical disk, delete the following virtual disks: Simple

Surely the fact that it's a simple volume (rather than mirrored/parity) shouldn't affect the ability to move the data off the disk? It appears that disk removal is implemented as a simulated drive failure, forcing a rebuild of the resiliency data, rather than by simply moving the data off the disk onto other available disks.

Additionally, after I've attempted to remove the disk, it's now been marked as 'Retired'.

Is there any simple way to remove this disk?

How to share files to homegroup?

Windows Server doesn't support homegroups like Windows 7 and 8 do so my question is how to "emulate" that? Say that I have a Pictures library on Windows Server that I want to share with R/W access with every homegroup user, current or future. What's the best way to do that?

win8/2012 directaccess killed my wifi

$

Win8 enterprise x64 client joined to a domain where we configured directaccess on server 2012 (edge deployment with external and internal nic, no certs needed).

Despite perpetually saying "connecting" directaccess works and I can easily access my file server via DA from different sites.  Unfortunately, it appears that the only wifi network that works is the one that I joined prior to configuring the DA gpos - any new networks I try to join hang the entire wifi UI - either hanging on the connect button itself or hanging just after - spinning endlessly saying "connecting" - even though networks with no security key actually do connect (secure networks never make it to the key prompt).

Any idea what might cause this?  the install is pretty vanilla except for office 2013 preview, adobe acrobat, and directaccess...

DirectAccess in ip4 environment

$

After reading that DirectAccess 2.0 works better in an ip4 environment, I decided to give it a try.  It is not working yet, but before spending more time troubleshooting or asking for specific help, I wanted to ask some general questions to see if it even should be working.

Instead of setting up a pure lab environment, I wanted to see if it would work in a network setup like our production.  Most of our equipment is ip6 capable (modern switches, windows 2008 or higher, all clients windows 7).    However, ip6 is running default configurations on everything.  In the case of our servers, that means they're creating their own link local addresses and nothing else.  We have a few switches hosting our pc's.  We have a few physical servers, while most servers are VMware based.  Of course, ip4 is all routable and everything can communicate with everything else.  But ip6 seems limited to the local broadcast domain.  In other words, 2 workstations on the same switch can ping the ip6 addresses of each other, but not servers on another switch.  2 physical servers can ping each other, but not a vm.  2 vm's can ping each others ip6 address, but not one of the physical servers.

So my question is, since ip6 is present and enabled everywhere, but not truly configured to work, will DirectAccess work?  Will DirectAccess be smart enough to use ip4 translation for everything, or will it try to use ip6 for server communications, which will fail?

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserver8gen/thread/146134b4-20c8-4f66-b24e-45e3dfab55c4

I have activated my windows and disable the UAC already and it's not show me apps store worked. When I run them they goes hide. I can see them in left-top panel on my computer but click on them again make them hide in 2-3 seconds. I found something in event viewer is .

Activation of app winstore_cw5n1h2txyewy!Windows.Store failed with error: The system cannot find the file specified. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information.

Let me know how  to solve it. Same time I have installed chrome and chrome metro apps is working fine. Do someone help me to get rid out of this.
