Multihoming and Server 2012

$

With Windows Server 2008 Multihoming a physical server with 2 physical NICs was possible, but static routing had to be done on the 2nd NIC. Currently for an example we have network A and network B . Network A is an internal network, where network B is an external network. We are looking to deploy Windows 2012 Datacenter on a physical machine with 2 NIC cards with the HyperV role assigned. Is manually assigning a statc route with no default gateway on the 2nd NIC still needed or is there a different way to allow the host to provide 2 network connections to A. itself and B. all VMs located on the host?

Thanks much

Dustin

Unix attributes not quite working

Hi

The domain was originally Windows 2003 upgraded to Windows 2003 R2. We had services for Unix with NIS server setup. We use AD to authenticate all our users on our linux servers via ldap.

We just have introduced 2 new DC with Windows 2012 and installed Identity Management for Unix (adminui, nis and psync) on both.

It automatically recognise the nis domain but the 2 windows 2003R2nis  did not appear. Same on the 2 Windows 2003R2, the new Windows 2012 nis did not appear.

On a new Windows 2012 DC, we created a new user and filled the Unix Attributes, but that user cannot log onto a linux box.

Looking at a Windows 2003 DC for that particular user, when we select the Unix Attribute for it, it says that the Primary Group is missing.

It does look like the replication works fine for everything but that particular Unix attribute.

However, it may be more complex because on one of the Linux box, a ldap querry for the new user does not show anything, even if we set the ldap client to point to the new Windows 2012 DC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as we would like to solve it before we demote our Windows 2003R2 DC

Thanks

Windows server 2012 network bridge could not be used for Hyper-V network switch. Worked in 2008R2.

The problem is: MAC bridge miniport didn't displayed in configure external network menu in Hyper-V manager-> Virtual switch manager.

I am using windows server 2012 RTM with latest updates.

Prerequisites: Hyper-v installed, 2 nics 1GB each drivers installed.

1. Going to network and sharing center  -> adapter settigs -> selecting 2 nic's -> create Bridge. MAC Bridge adapter appears.

2. Going to Hyper-V manager -> virtual switch manager -> new virtual network switch -> create -> select external network type .... In dropdown list there are no MAC bridge miniport! Only old adapters, that already used by bridge. Trying to use they return an error.

In windows server 2008 R2 same way i get 2 nic's bridge and virtual machines and physical server working fine.

Any ideas how to solve it?

Try to do some (crazy) experiments:

1. Try to add to bridge virtual network adapter. (bridge->properties->set additional checkbox on virtual adapter). Asked to reboot. After this, bridge disappeared at all, all checkboxes in protocols (adapter->properties) on all afflicted network adapters cleared.

Backup Failure - Filter Manager failed to attach to volume Error in Windows 2012 Essentials

I recently installed Windows 2012 Essentials fresh (didn't upgrade).  Everything was running great.  Had 1 computer attached to the domain.  Server was backing up the computer and also backing up itself fine with no problems for days.  Now I notice backup is failing and the following error occurs in Event Viewer.   What could be wrong here?

First 2 errors are these:

Hyper-V Disk IO Statistics

While running sqlio tests in a VM, I'm seeing some wild numbers. i.e. 14GB/s at 128K random write IOs  and 270K IOPS random write 8K IOs. Just to put things in perspective, the VM is stored on a Storage Spaces virtual disk sitting in a pool of 10 x 7200RPM SAS drives.

I'm looking at the stats on the physical host and I can't understand where that IO is going... If I look at the IO stats for that virtual HD, it matches what I see in the VM but I cannot balance it on the physical side of things.

Any idea of what I should be looking at?

Thanks!

DirectAccess 2012 and IPv6

I have a quick question for those who know, is the traffic between a DA client and the DirectAccess server still IPv6 like it is in UAG 2010? Reason is that the Lync app is not IPv6 aware and forced tunneling breaks it in UAG 2010 but if 2012 uses IPv4 then the Lync app should work.

DirectAccess in NLB

Hi everyone,

We are having issues configuring a DA NLB environment. We can configure a working single-server configuration with DA and NLB, but as soon as we run the wizard to include a second DA server to the setup, the wizard either stops (with an internal error) or it completes successfully but in fact leaves the NLB in a corrupt state (the DIPs and VIPs are not configured correctly on the second DA server).

We've tried different environments and several options with unicast/mac spoofing and multicast, but none work.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to move forward or what to look for? We're using the testlab documents from the Ms site. It just doesn't seem to work out of the box.

Thx, Stanley.

Training on server 2012... fairly new to MS server.

For server 2012 will the upcoming microsoft 2012 press books being released 12-5-12 be what most individuals will be using to get up to speed on server 2012? If more is needed what is another good resourse for 2012 training to learn the details of the server. I will have systems to setup in a lab to do the training but just looking for a little guidance as this will be my first microsoft cert attempt.

HI

I had installed a software in win server 2012.

The software has two exe one in GUI form and the other in CLI form.

In the server 2012 Apps list , the CLI option is not seen under the software name.

Other lower server versions of windows server are showing both the exe.

Please let me know what can be done in order to list CLI exe in the Apps list in server 2012.

Task Manager difference between Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012

Today I found a strange difference between the Task Manager in Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8. In Windows Server 2012 you only see the tabs CPU and Memory by default. Why is this, and how can this be changed, because disk and network are grayed out in Windows Server 2012. Both versions are the RTM.

In Windows 8 we see CPU, Memory, Disk and Network

Im running windows server 2012 standard. Its a node in a 3 node cluster. The server is a fully functional node, as i can failover to the node, it can see the iscsi storage, but if i try to view the disks, volumes etc on the server, All i see is an empty list and a little message saying "display will be complete when the server inventory has finished...".

I left it for 30 mins to see if it would finish but it never did. a reboot didnt help either. there is nothing in the error log. has anyone any ideas?

Update: i can view the disk info (volumes etc) from the Disk Mangement section of the old Computer Managment Console. Still not working from Server Manager.

Best possible scenario for Windows 2012 file server.

Hi there,<o:p></o:p>

We have few Windows 2003 file servers here. Each file server has hundreds of shares and some of those shares must be online during the working day. At the moment we are not using any file server clustering or DFS technology. All windows patches must be done at night or during weekend. <o:p></o:p>

We are looking on replacing our “old” Windows 2003 file servers with the new Windows 2012 servers. For this new project we have purchase two brand new HP servers (HP ProLiant DL360 Gen8). Both servers will be connected to SAN with iSCSI connection. <o:p></o:p>

We haven’t played with Windows Server 2012 much just yet so I need your professional advice on building best possible scenario for our future file server.<o:p></o:p>

Here are my proposed options so far.<o:p></o:p>

Option One<o:p></o:p>

We are going to install Windows Server 2012 on both HP servers. For each server we will create one or more LUNs on our SAN. All shares will be moved from old Win2003 servers onto the new ones. Logon script will be modified with new location path for the drive mappings. <o:p></o:p>

From what I can see, this option is pretty much the same what we always had. Still no fault tolerance and no high availability for shares. All security patches needs to be done at night…, again.<o:p></o:p>

Option Two<o:p></o:p>

Two node file server cluster will be setup. Now, we can patch and restart server during the working day. Maybe creating two node file server cluster is going to be over kill here… Maybe I need to look at the DFS option… No sure if DFS is better solutions with Windows 2012. And, from my memory does the DFS solution require double the space? Basically both file servers will have replicas of files and folders

Option Three<o:p></o:p>

Windows 2012 Server Core with Hyper-V role will be installed on both servers. We will create two node Hyper-V cluster with one or more Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) on SAN. On Hyper-V cluster we can create 2-4 virtual Windows 2012 servers. Now, we need to decide which option to choose for our file servers. Option one or two from my proposed option list.

Thanks in advance.

Connect to Hyper-V (local )server from laptop (domain)

Hi!

This might not be possible, but anyway, I have the following setup:

Server 2012 (anmosrv) not connected to a domain
Windows 8 laptop (MALLxxxx) connected to domain

What I'm trying to do is to connect to the Hyper-V running on the server from my Windows 8 clients Hyper-V manager.
When I enter the name of the server to connect to I get an access denied error, I'm using my domain account to connect to the server.

Is it possible to add my domain account to the groups required on the server? (Shouldn't be possible since it has no contact with the domain)
Or is there another way of doing this?

Best regards
Andreas Molin

Unable to modify Direct Access config

I've been playing around with setting up Direct Access with Server 2012.  I made a change to allow Windows 7 clients and selected an intermediate certificate authority.  I think I picked an incorrect intermediate CA...but now I cannot change the configuration.  When I launch the Remote Access Management Console, I get the message "Settings for the server myserver.mydomain.local cannot be retrieved.  The cmdlet did not run as expected."  I cannot modify any settings to fix the problem and cannot remove the role since the configuration exists.  Seems like it is just stuck.  Suggestions?

How to change the certificate for Direct Access?

$

I made a change to allow Windows 7 clients and selected an intermediate certificate authority.  I think I picked an incorrect intermediate CA...but now I cannot change the configuration.  When I launch the Remote Access Management Console, I get the message "Settings for the server myserver.mydomain.local cannot be retrieved.  The cmdlet did not run as expected."  I cannot modify any settings to fix the problem and cannot remove the role since the configuration exists.  Seems like it is just stuck.

A common resolution to this problem is:

  1. List root certificates using: "Get-ChildItem Cert:\LocalMachine\Root"
  2. Select the certificate you want: "$certificate = (Get-ChildItem Cert:\LocalMachine\Root)[IndexOfTheCertificateYouWant]
  3. Change the root certificate in the DA configuration: "Set-DAServer -IPsecRootCertificate $certificate"
  4. Now try to open the management console again.

Let me know if this helps,

But how do I find the Index of the certificate I want? Is there a specific certificate I should use?

Help: Remove a broken DHCP server failover relationship

$
0
0

Hi,

We created a test server (2012 std) and activated a dhcp server failover relationship with it.  After having conducted various tests, this server was deleted.  Unfortunately we discovered later that we couldn't remove the (now broken) dhcp failover relationship from the first server.

Whatever we try to do to remove the failover settings is honored with something like 'The DHCP service is not running on the target computer. Deconfigure failover failed'.

What do we do to force removal of this broken DHCP relationship?
