Windows server 2012 not restarting after installing Windows update
Hi!
We have just set up a new hosting environment based on windows server 2012 but are having problems with windows update.
The problem is that the servers wont restart automatically after installing an update even though we have set the setting that is should. Instead of restarting in the middle of the night when the update is installed it instead prompts that it will restart the next time the user signs out, which can be in the middle of the day!
I can see in the event log that it has installed an update and is planning on restarting, last time was this saturday jan 12.
I think that it might be caused by a user being logged on to the computer. Does anyone have any suggestions? I haven't had this issues with previous versions of Windows server...
Thanks in advance,
Mats
On-Link traffic being routed through default gateway
I have installed 2012 Datacenter on Dell R720 with three quad port B'com NICs (including the onboard). I created powershell script to assign the subnets to four ports for iSCSI networks (in line with Dell default documented subnets), teamed four ports using Windows native teaming, three ports with three subnets for cluster traffic (Heartbeat, CSV & Migrate) and the last port for management.
This last (Mgmt) port is the only port configured with a gateway. IPv6 is disabled across the board on each interface as far as I know.
I have not yet installed any vendor software so just vanilla Windows.
I am having trouble communicating with the other devices on the iSCSI subnets: 192.168.130.0/24, 192.168.131.0/24, 192.168.132.0/24, 192.168.133.0/24. Thought that the switches mght be VLAN'd incorrectly until I noticed that different servers (with same setup) were failing to ping on different subnets.
Tracert -d 192.168.130.101 shows that for one or two of these subnets on each server (and varies which two) that traffic is going out through the default gateway on the management port instead of going directly over the On-Link route of the network card on that LAN.
Not sure what I have done to cause this.

Windows server 2012 and smart card service triggered start problem
Hi!
In WS2012 smart card service is set to start as Automatic (triggered). I have problems with using smart cards over rdp session because it seems that smart card service wll not start automatically. So, I cannot use smart card logon and either some smart-card based web-apps in my environment.
Is it possible to start smart card service in WS 2012without any trigger and just keep it running?
Thanks,
UV

I've installed the Remote Access Direct Access roles and configured it and the RAMgmt show that all is working correctly.
I am not using IPv6 internally, only IPv4.
On my Windows 8 client - the GPO has been applied, and when connected directly to the LAN, the GET-DAConnectionStatus =ConnectedLocally.
When I connect the client via an external network connection, the DA shows the client as connected via ipHTTPS.
I can ping the client from DA and vice versa.
My issue is that I am not getting any name resolution from the client. What should I put in as the DNS server in the DA config for my domain prefix, the DA server or my actual IPv4 Internal DNS server.
I had this all working correctly before I moved to a virtual machine.
Any ideas?
Server 2012 - Map network drive
Hello,
I'm trying to map a network drive to a NetApp share on my Windows 2012 server. The share works fine on Win7 and Server 2008 but on Server 2012 I get the following error.
"The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occurred: An extended error has occurred"
I can ping the netapp from the server. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing the issue?
Thank you,
RDP Admin not listening on 3389
I have just installed 2012 standard onto a Dell R420 server (Broadcom NetExtreme NICs) and cannot get it to listen on 3389 for remote administration. So far:
- A netstat -a shows that the server doesn't appear to be listening on 3389.
- Remote Desktop is enabled by group policy but even if I remove the GPO and disable then re-enable remote desktop it still doesn't make any difference.
- Windows firewall is configured off for domain networks by group policy.
- I can ping and open the c$ share with full privs.
- I can browse the IIS holding page on the server.
- I cannot connect with the RDP client on Windows 7.
- I cannot telnet to 3389 on the server (Could not open connection to the host, on port 3389).
- The port configured in the registry is definitely 3389.
I've searched high and low for an answer but all the ones pertaining to Server 2008/R2 aren't applicable to 2012. I have other 2012 servers (Hyper-V guests) which do not exhibit this issue. I also managed to get this server responding once by reinstalling, connecting RDP, joining domain, connecting RDP again however this then stopped working after applying the available Windows Updates. Strangely, I have re-installed (including formatting the drive) and the issue has manifested straight out of the box.
Could anyone help with advice specifically for 2012. As much info as needed can be supplied.
Thanks

Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services
I am attempting to use Server 2008 license server for a Server 2012 RDS installation. I understand how to configure the license server but I get this message on my Server 2012 in the License Diagnoser.
The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per User licensing mode and No Redirector Mode, but license server dc1.cloud.local does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes:
Product version: Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2
Do I need to purchase seperate Server 2012 CAL's?
How to deploy BgInfo via GPO on Windows Server 2012
luck.
I've created bat script.
Script is located in
"\\domain\SysVol\domain\
and bat script contains following lines:
echo off
set bg="\\domain\SysVol\domain\
%bg%\bginfo "%bg%\default.bgi" /timer:0 /SILENT /NOLICPROMPT
and then I've created GPO policy.
The name of policy is "Bginfo Logon Script"
"Computer Configuration / User Configuration / Windows Settings / Scripts /
Logon"
I read lot of articles and topics about how to deploy BgInfo, but still
doesn't work.
I would by very glad if somebody help me.
Thanks.
New Start menu is slowing me down in Server 8 - PART 2
I have no problem whatsoever with the Start Screen, except getting to it. When Alt-Home is my only option, it seems to be a fail. It isn't more to support a button. In fact, I'll prove it.
https://startscreenbutton.codeplex.com/
That is a program I wrote in about 10 minutes that you can pin to the taskbar and upon being clicked it will open the start screen. That is all I wanted and all I need to make my experience working over RDP, VNC, LogMeIn, and the like so much easier. I understand the need to get people used to the new interface, and I'm all for that. However, RDP requires a different approach. Even if the same method for showing the desktop, the little vertical bar on the right of the taskbar, were duplicated on the left to bring up the Start Screen that would be invisible to most users, but big enough to use in an RDP session.

Sever 2012 Core Fails installing KB2798897 from WSUS with Error 0x80070643
Hi,
as evident by the title one of my Server 2012 core machines (in fact the hyper-v Host) failes to install the Root Certificate Update (KB2798897)
It tries every night but always fails with the following error:
"Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Update for Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 (KB2798897)."
Any ideas?
PS: I would also be content if someone could tell me how I can install rvkroots.exe manually on a server core installation.
Microsoft VDI Template
So the Microsoft VDI is setup and functioning on the Server 2012 host...
Whats the best way to change the image the desktops are created from? for example if I need to install a app on the template are if I need to grant access to a folder in c:\program files\ to all domain users?

LastLogon property for computers
Hello,
Supposedly, the LastLogon property for a computer indicates the last time the computer logged on to its domain. I've seen it mentioned in passing in a couple of places. But it's not clear whatexactly this means. Is it the last time the computer was restarted? Or is the last time a domain user logged on to it? Or is it the last time a service running under the System account started? Or... ?
I've noticed that WS12 and W8 VMs in my virtual lab keep refreshing their LastLogon property approximately every 15 minutes or so. I wonder why.
A related question is, Since it appears that LastLogon is not the time of the last reboot, is there another property for that purpose? I mean a property of a computer object in AD DS that stores either the last reboot time or other info from which the last reboot time could be easily derived. I know this info is available through WMI and is also burried in domain controllers' security logs. But it'd be better if there were something more straightforward, something similar to the LastLogon property as it's done for users.

IPAM does not work as Hyper-V guest?
I 've been testing this for quiet a while now: running IPAM as a Hyper-V vm does not work (reliably).
Problems start when you "unblock" the manged servers. For reasons that I yet do not know, IPAM cannot reliably connect to the managed servers. The GPOs generally work, the audit shares, the firewall configuration and all these things are configured. I manually configured/checked the whole bunch of configuration steps, I also started the IPAM provisioning script manually, disabled the firewalls and so on.
If you uncheck the manged services box (DHCP, DNS, DC ..) and check it again: suddenly it works. Sometimes.
My question is: has anyone out there seen the same weird behaviour? It makes me nuts, I checked it on x servers over and over again.

SSDP service missing from Server 2012 Core
I'm attempting to install a copy of Server Core 2012 and it'll be running a UPnP server (PS3 Media Center). One of the pre-reqs for this to work is the SSDP service, which appears to be missing when I install Core. I have installed full Server 2012 and the service is installed & available but it seems to be missing in Core.
Am I missing something?
Sharepoint webdav access via a Scheduled Task
I have a server which runs a monitoring script (PowerShell) and outputs the results to an html file. Nothing complicated. However, I'd like to dump that file to our sharepoint server.
Now, when I log in as the user I want the task to run as, I can use Explorer and type the UNC to a Shared Documents library in our site via WebDAV. I can also open a PowerShell session as that user and can test-path and even cd to the same path (I have the web client service installed and running).
If I run the script in that user's PowerShell session, it runs perfectly fine.
However, as soon as I run that script from a scheduled task (running as the same user), it fails even trying to "Test-Path : Access is denied"
2013-02-26T18:39:42: Moving Report to SharePoint 2013-02-26T18:39:42: Testing path \\www.site.com\path\to\site\library\ Test-Path : Access is denied At C:\Scripts\Test.ps1:23 char:5+ if (Test-Path $repoPath){+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ CategoryInfo: PermissionDenied: (\\....\:String) [Test-Path], UnauthorizedAccessException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : ItemExistsUnauthorizedAccessError,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.TestPathCommand 2013-02-26T18:39:42: Unable to connect 2013-02-26T18:39:42: Script exiting.
I don't understand what's different between when the user runs the script in a PowerShell session vs when the user runs the script from a sched task.
[Now, in the interest of full disclosure, because you can't just specify a powershell script to run, I have a .bat file that takes a single param and runs the desired script. Not only can I run this .bat script in a CMD window as the desired user and it works just fine as well, but I've also pulled the .bat file out of the picture and just directly had the sched task call powershell.exe -nologo -noninteractive [scriptname] and the same access denied happens. It's one added layer of abstraction, but works to make the sched task action trigger less complex.]
I'm a bit unsure of what to do at this point. Clearly when I run the script (either the .bat in a CMD prompt or the .ps1 in a powershell session) directly it runs just fine - even as the same user as the sched task. But when I run it by executing the sched task, it fails to be able to connect.
Any help would be appreciated.
