Degraded perfomance on hosts virtual nic when using nic teaming in Server 2012

$

Hi,

We have two HP ML 350 G6 with HP NC375T running Windows Server 2012 RC. These servers are connected to a D-Link DGS-3120-24TC using LACP on all four ports on each server.

Lets call them Host A and Host B

I've set the Load Balancing to "Address Hash". This works greats before I add the new team to a Hyper-V switch. I get around 300 MiB/s over SMB between the Host A and Host B when copying large files.

When I add the team to a Hyper-V switch and get a virtual NIC instead (running at 10 Gbe) I only get 115 MiB/s between Host A and Host B. So I only get the performance of 1 gbe link.

But here's the twist. I'ts only the virtual NIC on the hosts that has these performance issues. If I copy a file from Host A to a VM running on Host A I get around 400 MiB/s when the traffic never leaves the virtual switch. If I copy a file from Host B to a VM running on Host A I only get 115 MiB/s. When copying between a VM running on Host A to a VM running on Host B i get around 150-190 MiB/s. So this proves that the teams are working under the Hyper-V switch, just not for the hosts virtual NIC.

Any suggestions?

Recommended Free Antivirus for Server 2012?

$

Short story, found out that Server 2012 doesn't have a antivirus that comes with it, I purchased MSDN subscription a while back when it was released and installed it as a desktop and been using it without issues.

I need suggestions on a free based antivirus that's not the System Center or Endpoint thing I've read searching the forums, seems like you have to pay for it and MSDN subscription (the one I have) doesn't cover it for download.

So basically if you guys know of any free/personal use antivirus I can install on Server 2012, much appreciated.

Remote desktop and Metro

I'm have a windows 8 server with a windows 8 consumer hyper-v guest

I also have a standalone pc running straight windows 8 consumer.

I have a couple of issues:

When using the metro RDP, there's no way to take it out of full screen mode (windowed mode),   I usually have multiple rdp sessions open side by side so I can work/see both.  I dont appear to have this ability anymore since its full screen. I have to toggle between the two.

Having the metro RDP in full screen also makes some of the "cool" and "improved" metro things not work.  For instance, try to pull up the start menu or reboot the VM.   It seems to only activate for the client.  Since there's no indication of which PC the menu is attached to, so I found out the hard way when my client was rebooted and not the VM.

To get around these I've started running rdp from the command line: mstsc

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Can't Install Desktop Experience on Server 2012 - Sources problem

$

Hi Guys,

I have been struggling to install the Desktop Experience (Which includes Ink and Handwriting Services) feature on a new Server 2012 VM, and I haven't been able to.  It always says it can't find the sources ("Do you need to specify an alternate source path?"), even though the DVD image is readily accessible to the server I try yo deploy this to (the same server where I tried to add the feature from).

I think I have tried pretty much everything (From UI through Server Manager, to PowerShell and DISM), and I get "The source files could not be found".

My preferred method would be the UI one, but I still can't figure out what I am missing.  The Server 2012 image is available on the server directly (through Hyper-V CD mount).

I know that by default, Windows will try to use Windows Update to get the feature files from (if no offline location is specified), but for some reason that one fails too.

I tried using as a source location (My understanding is that the files are inside the WIM):

-    WIM:E:\Sources\Install.wim:2

-    E:\Sources\SxS\

-  Mounting the WIM in a folder on the C drive through DISM, and reference that path in the "Add Roles and Features screen"

And of the countless times I've tried, I always get "The source files could not be found. Try installing roles, role services, or features again in a New Add Roles and Features Wizard session, and on the confirmation page of the wizard, click "Specify an alternate source path" to specify a valid location of the source files that are required for the installation. The location must be accessible by the computer account of the destination server."

I have rebooted the server, and I have made sure the DVD image is available (by opening the E drive on windows explorer and browsing through the installer folders.

As a side note, on this server I also installed .NET 3.5 from this same offline source, by referencing "E:\Sources\SxS\" as the install source, and everything went just fine.  Still not sure what I am missing.

Thoughts?

Connection delay

Hi,

I just upgraded my webserver from win 2008 to win 2012. Everything is fine except that this machine now takes about 9 seconds to connect on some external wcf clients (Net tcp). I tried to disable firewall, reboot but the problem persist. This issue can be reproduced using telnet (telnet 189.33.103.124 9388 for example).
Does anybody now how can I fix this problem or why this is happening?

Cant Install Windows Server 2012 - Error on Setup Launch

$

Windows Server 2008 R2 Installation works fine, but when I try to install 2012 from DVD, it begins to copy files over then you get the weird blue error (not BSOD) screen that Windows 8/2012 has. It flickers and restarts itself fast enough that I cant really read the error message, but it says something along the lines of "oops something happened and your computer will need to restart." I am not 100% sure that is the error as it flashes too fast for me to really catch it.

To try and get around this, I attempted to install Windows Server 2008 R2 (Which completed without issues), and I tried to "Upgrade" by installing on top of the 2008 R2 Installation (Upgrade while in Windows). This gives me the following error.

Windows Setup cannot find a location to store temporary installation files. To install Windows, make sure that a partition on your boot disk has at least 1237 megabytes (MB) of free space.

Error code: 0x80070490

I have 4x 120GB SSD's and 6 2TB HDDs attached to this rig, there is more than enough space to install windows.

I do know that with my Motherboard (SuperMicro X9DRL-3F), the Intel Sata Controller and SAS Controllers don't show up by default in Windows Server 2008 R2 and require that I "browse" to the CD to install the drivers manually before it would recognise them to find drives to install to, but I am not sure if that is the actual issue at hand, as I am just speculating. I do not get the option to load or install drivers for my SATA and SAS Controllers as the installation fails before I reach that point.

Thanks in advance,

Richard

trust relationship between two forests and conditional forwarders

Hi,

I've been  dealing with AD since august 2012, at the moment I'm preparing to 70-640 exam with Microsoft Press  Exam MCTS 70-640.

I'm trying to perform exercises from capital 12

I have two forests, contoso.com and tailspintoys.com, I want to create two-way relationship. I have created a stub zone in contoso.com for tailspintoys.com, then I wanted to create a CF on tailspintoys.com DC for contoso.com DC but I get an error:
The server with this IP adress is not athoritative for the required zone.

I have created two-way relationship between forests, and selected selective login, I have authenticated users from tailspintoys.com to login on contoso.com DC but when I try to log in as tailspintoys\username on contoso.com DC I get error:

The security database on this server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship

I suppose that it may be some kind problem with DNS, I have completely no idea.

All kind of help, refeer links etc will be appreciated.

The OS is installed on a separate hard drive connected to a silicon image 3512 controller, the sata ports on the motherboard are used in the storage pool (four 3TB hard drives in parity mode). I'm not sure if the pci card has a faulty driver or there is a bug in the storage pool driver, spaceport.sys is more likely to be related to the latter. The crash happens about once a day.

I loaded the minidump into windbg, you can also download it from here: http://homesys.tv/110312-21875-01.zip

DirectAccess 2012 and IPv6

$

I have a quick question for those who know, is the traffic between a DA client and the DirectAccess server still IPv6 like it is in UAG 2010? Reason is that the Lync app is not IPv6 aware and forced tunneling breaks it in UAG 2010 but if 2012 uses IPv4 then the Lync app should work.

Windows Storage Spaces - Sleep options for hard drives?

$

0

Hey everyone,

I currently run an unRAID server and WHS 2011 in my office. unRAID is used strictly for massive amounts of data storage, and WHS 2011 is used for client PC backups and other automation needs. This setup has been working great for the past 4-5 years (previously used WHS v1). However, I've always had to use two machines which creates more noise and eats up more electricity then needed.

Now that Storage Spaces is coming out, I'm really excited about possibly converting my unRAID server into a Windoers 2012 server and using that one server to do everything. That parity option in Storage Spaces sounds even better implemented then unRAID's implementation... by breaking disks down into 250 MB chunks and immediately rebuilding data in the event of a lost drive... very cool!

However, one of the things I like about unRAID is that it turns off my hard drives if they haven't been used for a specific interval. Right now, I set that for 2 hours. This keeps the electricity costs down, as well as the heat generated by the machine.

So... will Windows Server 2012 (or Storage Spaces) do the same or something similar?

sconfig on german windows 2012 server version

$

I am not sure where to post bugs as connect doesn't accept anything for windows 2012.

When you install the server core of windows 2012 in german language, sconfig is not working out of the box.

You get:
"Eingabefehler: Die Skriptdatei "C:\Windows\System32\en-US\sconfig.vbs" wurde nicht gefunden."

which means: it can't find the file sconfig.vbs.
I found the file under c:\Windows\System32\de-DE\sconfig.vbs.

To fix the issue, I just copied this file over to the en-US directory.
But it seems there is a problem with the locale as it looks within the english directory for the script, while it is only available within the german directory.

Also the latest Windows 2012 update did not fix the issue, and it's happening on every install. (No matter if it's core only, or full install).

Thanks
Patrick

My Application event viewer is logging these 2 events every second. Is anyone able to inform me on to why both are being logged that many times and if there is concern for worry.  Only thing installed other than Windows Server 2012 is SQL Server 2012. I never noticed the log entries, seemed to have started sometime last week.  Only thing I have done since is scheduled Windows Backup. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Chuck
