Move/copy of dangling junctions in file hierarchies hangs Explorer in Win2012 (not a problem in Win8)

Move/copy of dangling junctions in file hierarchies hangs in Win2012 Explorer.

This kind of problem was reported for Win7 back in 2011 - but seems corrected in Win8 (however, not in Win2012?): http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/win-7-moving-unavailable-junction-hangs/48531be2-9c77-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?msgId=08d13365-7979-e011-9b4b-68b599b31bf5

Problem does not occur in Win8 - i.e. when accessing those same file hierarchies with dangling junctions over the network from a Win8 client ... explorer does not hang in Win8.

In Win2012 I was moving file hierarcies off legacy volumes to volumes in storage spaces.

Storage Pool broken - Drives with an unrecognized configuration - Unrecognized Metadata

Hi everybody,

does someone of you know what I have to do now?

What I did:
•Turned the System to Hibernation.
•Booted a Windows 8 from USB Harddisk.
•Opened the Storage Space and wrote a file on it.
•Rebooted and continued the other System.

I understand, that this was not my best idea I ever had... grrr

But: I've build another System, other Hardware but same Scenario. Two harddisks as Storage Pool, one Storage Space mirrored. Two OS Installations, hibernate the first one, written to the storage space with the second one, reboot and woken up the first OS. Everything okay and works fine.

I have an Event log entry indicating some further Details:

Die Konfiguration konnte vom physischen Laufwerk "{7934ba4-fdcc-bb8d-806e3246963}" nicht gelesen werden, oder es wurden beschädigte Daten für Speicherpool "{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}" zurückgegeben. Daher ist die Konfiguration im Arbeitsspeicher möglicherweise eine veraltete Kopie der Konfiguration. Rückgabecode: 0xC000000D

I have another screenshot from the PowerShell get-physicaldisk command, which indicates an Unrecognized Metadata:

The yellow marked entry is the System disk, a ssd harddisk.

Unable to access to my shares (administrative and network)

Good morning,

I have installed 3 Windows 2012 datacenter on a VMWare ESX but I have some troubles with one of them (only one).

I'm only able to access on c$ (admin share) but not on my 2 other partitions.

Some information :

- The server has 3 partitions

==> C:System (SAS - local disk)

==> E:DATA and I:ArcGisServer (2 TB datastore from my SAN so I have 1 TB for disk E and 1 TB for disk I)

- I can't access to E$ or I$ (I've also tried to create network shares to try to access E and I, but no more luck) but I should be able to, as I can see them im my shares definition.

- All machines are in the same domain

- I'm admin on all the machines and I've tried to access share with servers and a client machine on the same domain too

- I've also tried to set rights to everyone (all) on the share properties and on ntfs rights too...but it doesn't let me access it

- I can see the share from another server but I can't access it "You do not have permission to access \\ServerA\ArcGisServer"

- Here are the acl on my partitions

C:\Windows\system32>cacls I:
I:\ Everyone:(OI)(CI)F

C:\Windows\system32>cacls E:
E:\ Everyone:R
    CREATOR OWNER:(OI)(CI)(IO)F
    NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)F
    XXXXX\13540:(OI)(CI)F
    BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)F
    BUILTIN\Users:(OI)(CI)R
    BUILTIN\Users:(CI)(special access:)
                      SYNCHRONIZE
                      FILE_APPEND_DATA

    BUILTIN\Users:(CI)(IO)(special access:)
                          SYNCHRONIZE
                          FILE_WRITE_DATA

- No firewall

- I can access share on the server itself (with admin share or network share name)

Thank you for your help

Bug Win2012/Win2008R2? Separating WDS and DHCP server: Removing WDS role from DC leaves behind DHCP option 60 as "unknown" in scope options

There seems to be a bug here ...

DHCP option 60 (when a WDS role is relocated from DC on srv1 to srv2) is left behind as an unknown DHCP option on srv1 disturbing discovery of WDS (relocated) to srv2

Status Pré: WDS+DHCP on srv1
Status Post: DHCP on srv1 + WDS on srv2, WDS on srv2 authorized with DHCP on srv1, srv1 and srv2 on same network

Symptom: WDS on srv2 does not receive any traffic from PXE client
Test:
srv2: WDSUTIL /Set-Server /WDSClientLogging /Enabled:Yes
pxe client: DHCP request
srv1: DHCP handle transacted
pxe client: Hangs trying to complete PXE transaction
(result)
srv2: Evt Viewer>Application and Service Logs>Microsoft>Windows>Deployment-Service-Diagnostics logs no traffic

Problem: DHCP>Scope ...>Scope Options>Unknown (after WDS role was removed)

Solution: DHCP>Scope ...>Scope Options>Unknown>delete

Test:
srv2: WDSUTIL /Set-Server /WDSClientLogging /Enabled:Yes
pxe client: DHCP request
srv1: DHCP handle transacted
pxe client: Hangs trying to complete PXE transaction
(results)
srv2: Evt Viewer>Application and Service Logs>Microsoft>Windows>Deployment-Service-Diagnostics logs traffic
pxe client: connects with WDS

Deduplication - Compressed drive question

Hi

Several weeks ago i believe i saw a web article stating that if a compressed folder on a drive is uncompressed, and dedup is enabled, deduplication will not kick in. Unfortunately i did not record the URL and now i can't find the article..

=> Is this correct ?

Some context :

- 2008 R2 server to be upgraded to Server 2012

- We have some volumes with large areas with NTFS drive compression on (we were running out of space)

- some of these areas have high repeat file counts so would be suitable for deduplication but a catch 22 exists in that i have limited space to uncompress them

- IF i could uncompress folders and dedeuplication kicked in, then i could afford to do chunks over many weeks until all the compressed folders are uncompressed

So you can see why it is important i get the correct answer.

I am guessing this work flow should work :

- copy compressed folders (drive A) to spare volume as uncompressed folders (drive B)

- delete the compressed folders on drive A

-Copy folder on drive B back to drive A ?

Thanks

Database with images on 2012.

I'm looking for advice on what would be the best setup. I have a printing shop with 6 computers and I want to setup a server to distribute and organize pictures (massive collection of about 70000 images.) and allow certain users access. I dont want to allow everyone all access rights which i'm sure can be somehow controlled through an active domain. The basic idea is to allow users to see (possibly preview if this is possible.) download and upload images as quickly as possible via connection with the server. What would be the best way to set this up using server 2012? (i already have the hardware in place.) Open to any suggestions or possible software to organize and distribute images over a local intranet environment.

Hi everybody.

I have this problem on a Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, offering SCOM2012 and VMM2012 SP1  services.

If I try to access to \\servername\c$ , or vmm agent on a server try to access it, in the "Server Manager , File and Storage Services, Servers" console I can see the message, every minutes:

servernameID 30620 WarningMicrosoft-Windows-SMBClient Microsoft-Windows-SMBClient/Operational - Connection to server \servername IP Address x.x.x.x:445 was aborted.

I alreday apply the registry update:

LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy QWORD = 1

UAC and firewall on the server are disabled.

Anyone have some suggestion for me ?

Thanks.

Change Input Language on Core

In the old days - on 2008 Core and R2 Core- it was possible to change input language / Keyboard layout in  the intl.cpl app. That function has been removed in 2012 Core. Isn't it possible to change this after installation?

Install Routing and Remote Access Service without DirectAccess

Hello,

Is it possible to install RRAS separetaly from DirectAccess?

I have no use for DirectAccess or VPN features from the Remote Access role.

The problem is that i can't go through the configuration wizard because my server don't have a public IP connected directly.

And that "1" on the notification box is annoying.

Thanks.

NIC Teaming - Host Unmanageable

When I open the NIC Teaming gui on windows 2012 - the server host is showing as unmanageable.  Also the 4 NIC's are showing as "can not be added to team".  But the 4 nic's are not part of any other team.  Currently I do not have any teams configured.    I am using the datacenter version of Windows 2012.

The NIC's have ip addresses and seem to be working properly other then the fact that I can not team them which I will need to do.  Can anyone figure this one out?

Server 2012 and Windows Update Schedule - only option is daily installation?

Hi all

How to configure Windows Update on Server 2012 to install updates once a week?

I've assigned a GPO with WSUS-Settings for installation once a week, which is working on Server 2008 R2 and earlier versions.

But on Server 2012 it won't be applied correctly because under "Automatic Maintenance" in the "Action Center" area in the Control Panel there is only one option to choose which is daily installation.

How to change the update frequency to weekly? I've not found any option within GPO or GUI.

Thanks.

Add a Local Intranet URL in Internet Explorer 8/9 in Windows Server 2012 Group Policy

I have a Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller and need to add the IRM URL to Local Intranet Sites.

Previous process in Server 2008 R2 was to use Internet Explorer Maintenance in Group Policy.  That feature has been removed in 2012.

What is the process for this in Server 2012?

Intermittent connectivity to the server every 20-30 minutes from domain users

Hello there,

I'm having some weird issue with Windows Server 2012 Standard

Installed on HP Proliant ML150 G6

Server roles installed:

DC, DHCP, DNS

Serving 50 users, it's main purpose is to run as a file server.

The weird thing is, every 20 minutes give or take, random domain users lose their connection for 30 seconds (not all of them in the same time), at that time they can't access to the network mapped drives, when they click on the mapped drive, it hangs for about 30 seconds until the connection is restored and also during that time they cannot surf the web.

I can confirm that it is not a network issue, because I can still ping other clients and the router, the only computer that reply me with a timeout is the server itself, and after 30 secs, I am getting a reply.

another thing is worth of mentioning is that when I log into the server via Logmein from my home, there seems to be no issue, the connection is stable and at the same time, some users lose their connection to the server for 30 seconds - give or take. is it possible that it have something to do with the Windows Firewall? any suggestions?

ReFS corrupt, apparently. MS, I am disappoint.

Had a blackout. UPSs weren't configured to power servers down. Eventually servers died from lack of power. . . *tear*

Power came back briefly; servers tried to start (Hyper-V host started to some extent) then power failed again and BAM.

Power is stable now. Brought up TMG, main DC and trying to bring up Hyper-V host, however, getting funny errors.

Hyper-V MMC shows all guests as "Off-Critical"

Attempting to start them yields the following error:

The application encountered an error while attempting to change the state of 'VM name'
'VM name' failed to start.
Failed to lock virtual machine's configuration.

Expanding details:

'VM name' failed to start.
Failed to lock virtual machine's configuration.
'VM name' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID 12345678-8765-4321-1234567890AB)

Going to try and see if IRST will explain anything. Running Hyper-V 2012 (core).

Logon to Windows Server 2012 as domain admin causes blue screen and restart

I am trying to add a Windows Server 2012 member server to a Windows 2008 R2 Native mode domain, the add works without problems, but when I attempt to logon as domain admin it starts logging in and then fails, and restarts.  If I logon as local admin, the message about the PC recovering from a serious error appears.

I do not see much in the event logs to point me in the right direction.  there are no logon scripts executing on this computer when logging in.

Windows is activated as well.  Has anyone got any ideas about what might be causing this?

SSL VPN (SSTP) Connection Issue

$

Hello all,

I am struggling with the configuration of an SSL VPN using Server 2012. Here is what I did:

1) Installed the Routing and Remote Access and Web Server (IIS) Roles

2) Configured RRAS as VPN Only, Custom, and VPN

3) Opened IIS and created a self signed certificate. Exported the certificate to my client machine (Server 2008 R2 installed on a laptop as a workstation) and then imported the certificate.

4) Re-opened RRAS and selected properties to set the self signed certificate

5) Port forwarded all 443 traffic to my RRAS/Server 2012 instance from my router (DLink DIR-330)

6) Opened 443 on my RRAS/Server 2012 Firewall

6) Attempted to connect via my client machine

At this point, I get an error that the target machine actively refused the connection.

Please help,

Kelly
