IIS and DNS?

$

Hi. I just got a copy of Windows Server 2012 and need some help! (I'm new to this.. so a step by step instruction would be great.)

I have a domain (awtechnologies.com) and a public ip (123.2.765.43) for example. And my internal IP is 10.0.0.4.

I have IIS and DNS installed on server 10.0.0.4

Now, I am stuck.

How do I configure the DNS server on my windows server to connect to my registered domain?

And, what do I do in IIS to make the website work (as far as bindings)
Last question, what do I do on the domain control panel to make it work? The domain only allows me to set Name Servers.

Thanks.

Superfetch and Server 2012

Hi,

I am curious to know why Superfetch was implemented on Server 2012 and it's not working.

We knew that on Server 2008 R2 it was present in kernel but not activated so with some homework we managed to get it going.

It seems that on Server 2012 the whole service is incomplete.

Files like sysmain.dll that has same hashcheck a the W8 x64 version are there, but then other files like readyboost.sys and various folder that go with it are missing. Also Superfetch service is not complete as a dependency is missing.

All this can be fixed as you can import files and registry settings from W8, fix service dependency and also task schedule, this get's it to working but only for a while as then service stops on his own.

My question is : will Superfetch service be fixed to work in a future Server 2012 update or will it remain there not working ?

I do not find it logical to implement something that does not work.

In anyway, any answer on the matter will appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi,

My ReFS volume is not accessible anymore. It shows capacity zero, used size zero.

The volume is on a parity thin virtual drive.

Any suggestion on how can I get this fixed and access to my data?

Thanks,
Adrian

SSDP service missing from Server 2012 Core

I'm attempting to install a copy of Server Core 2012 and it'll be running a UPnP server (PS3 Media Center). One of the pre-reqs for this to work is the SSDP service, which appears to be missing when I install Core. I have installed full Server 2012 and the service is installed & available but it seems to be missing in Core.

Am I missing something?

Windows server 2012 and smart card service triggered start problem

Hi!

In WS2012 smart card service is set to start as Automatic (triggered). I have problems with using smart cards over rdp session because it seems that smart card service wll not start automatically. So, I cannot use smart card logon and either some smart-card based web-apps in my environment.

Is it possible to start smart card service in WS 2012without any trigger and just keep it running?

Thanks,

Hyper-v - VDI collections setup fails

$

I have tried on my own and following the Windows Server 8 lab - desktop VDI setup and I can't get any collection to be created. I have syspreped both Win 7 and Win 8 desktops, and the errors are the same (no very verbose). Event log has this:

A storage device in 'win8-master' loaded but has a different version from the server.  Server version 5.1  Client version 4.2 (Virtual machine ID 453F1D9F-B16E-41A6-89AC-E49FA1B938A4). The device will work, but this is an unsupported configuration. This means that technical support will not be provided until this problem is resolved. To fix this problem, upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu.

But upgrading integration services on win7 made no difference.

The only error on the collections page is this (for the 2 virtual desktops in the pool):

Vir-0 - Failed: the operation has been cancelled.

Vi -1 - Failed: the virtual desktop did not start correctly

Any ideas?

iSCSI target issues - iSNS, management, functionality etc.

Some related iSCSI target questions.

1. Using Server Manager - File and Storage Servers - iSCSI, I've added an iSCSI virtual disk and created an iSCSI target that points to it. I also have the iSNS role running, which supports iSCSI target discovery. I have other (non-Microsoft) software targets using iSNS.

But how do I register the Microsoft iSCSI target with the iSNS server? This looks like it was possible with the Microsoft iSCSI software target v3.3: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg232638(v=ws.10).aspx. I can't find registering with iSNS servers anywhere in the iSCSI UI under Server 2012 RC.

2. There doesn't seem to be a way of managing iSCSI targets that don't have any iSCSI disks configured from the UI. If you delete all iSCSI virtual disks for a target (but don't delete the target), those iSCSI targets no longer show up in the iSCSI targets part of the UI.

3. Is there a way of attaching a real physical (not virtual) pass through disk to an iSCSI target? The Starwind iSCSI target allows this.

4. Is it possible to connect to an iSCSI target on the same server? It doesn't seem to work - I get "Connection Failed". The Starwind iSCSI target allows this.

The v3.3 target didn't allow this per http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverfiles/thread/d202f326-092b-4783-85b7-cdeb7240bedb/. But is this limitation still in place for the built-in 2012 target?

This is needed when you need iSCSI to allow multiple cluster hosts to connect to the same target for shared storage (e.g. for a cluster), and one of those cluster hosts also need to host the iSCSI software target. This is the case when you have a limited number of physical servers.

Storage pool: Optimize-Volume -SlabConsolidate never finishes

I have a storage pool with multiple parity and mirror volumes set up and populated with data. All are thin provisioned.

When I try to optimize a volume the process seems to get stuck at Slab Analysis:

PS C:\Windows\system32> Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter o -ReTrim -SlabConsolidate -Verbose
VERBOSE: Invoking slab consolidation on misc (O:)...
VERBOSE: Slab Analysis: 0% complete...

CPU is idling, there is close to zero disk access. After 28 hours there has been no visible progress. The volume has 29 GB of data, uses 49.5 GB of pool capacity, so it's not huge by any standard.

Obviously something is not working right. Event viewer shows nothing out of the ordinary, as far as I can tell. OS edition is WS 2012 Essentials but I posted here as it seems not to be an Essentials-specific issue.

Any suggestions on how to further analyze this problem are welcome.

EDIT: File system in use is ReFS - not sure if it matters in this context.

Server 2012 Deduplication Memory Problems

$

I have enabled dedup on several of our DFS servers running as Hyper-V Guests (Server 2012).

Two of the servers have volumes of 1.2 TB and 2 TB containing home drives. These volumes refuse to start deduplication despite other volumes on the server working as expected. The other two servers work as expected and have achieved 30% dedup rates.

The following is logged in the event log:

Optimization job on volume F: (\\?\Volume{7ef0879c-95de-11df-8176-005056bf4d87}\) was configured with insufficient memory.

System memory percentage: 50
Available memory: 4047 MB
Minimum required memory: 15839643 MB

I have tried fiddling with the memory of the guest and have toggled dynamic memory with no effect. Why does the server think it needs hundreds of terabytes of RAM to deduplicate?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

how to check workarround for event task send mail (deprecated) in win svr 2012

Hi :)

I've created in Win Svr 2012 task on event to start program (because send mail is deprecated - DISASTER ! - shame on you MS ;)

I've entered in program filed call for powershell and in parameters field:

Send-MailMessage -From "sender@md" -To "receiver@md" -Subject "subject" -Body "text“ -SmtpServer smtp_server_address

Becase it is triggered task running it have make no sence, history says that task is executed.

If I run command manually in powershell it is executed and mail is sent.

I've try to "inject" in event log event which should triggered to task be executed with PS:

Write-Eventlog  -Logname "event log name" -source "source" -eventID event_num -EntryType Warning -message "TEST"

And I can see new event in log but task scheduler not execute task on event :(

Any idea or suggestion ?

Thank you.

after demoting my server as a DC. my old user profile is "unknown"

So I was messing around with my home network and I was trying to setup a home local domain. after unsuccessfully doing so, I decided to uninstall/remove the AD DS service/role. after removing those features and demoting my server as a domain controller, my old user profile of administrator is lost. I believe it is showing under control panel/user accounts, but it is listed as "unknown" account. Either:

A) How do I restore the old profile? or,

B) How do I import that user profiles settings, programs, etc into my new administrator profile.

I would prefer to restore my old profile entirely. I am running server 2012 with a virtual win8 pc inside of it. I am referring to the admin account I had setup prior to creating my unsuccessful domain and promoting my server to a DC.

I am trying to find all of the rows of information in a table that match criteria of another table wtih one parameter being fed. What is the syntax for that.

I have two tables, table 1with the data that I am trying to retrieve multiple rows and multiple columns of data from, and the other with ID's of records that I am wanting the data from in table 1.

I know that I use InnerJoin, but it isn't working for me. Here is what I have.

SELECT * FROM Table1 INNER JOIN Table2 on Table1.* where Table2.ID = @ID"

@ID is a session variable I am feeding that containes the id I am looking for all the records of in table 2.

Thanks

Move NTDS and SYSVOL to another partition on current DC

Hello,

I need to move NTDS and SYSVOL folders to another partition on the current DC.

I already checked the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842162 but i would like to know if it is possible to do it only by promoting another Domain Controller.

Otherwise, i will not promote another DC. I will just  follow the link above. What do you think is easier and safer?

Thanks

Problem joining server 2012 to existing server 2003 domain.

Hi,

I'm having the problem as stated above.

Server 2003 is a single domain controller with the following configurations:

The Server 2003 domain have been raise to the windows server 2003 forest and functional level.

At the same time I have created a new host record name for the Server 2012 server.

Both server is pingable to each other be it on IP address or the server hostname.

The server 2003 dns is pointing on its own. As for the server 2012 server its using the server 2003 ip address as DNS.

Right after when i complete the joining domain process screen on the GUI, I received the below screen error.

After restarting the server 2012, I was able to login to the shimz domain using the administrator account. However when i tried promoting the Server 2012 to a domain controller, the server was unable to locate the shimz domain. I know that this problem is related to the DNS but just don't know what am I missing here.

Upon checking the netsetup.log it seems that the server 2012 is not connected to the shimz domain. BTW how can i attach logs file in here?

Any help here would be highly appreciated.

LastLogon property for computers

$

Hello,

Supposedly, the LastLogon property for a computer indicates the last time the computer logged on to its domain. I've seen it mentioned in passing in a couple of places. But it's not clear whatexactly this means. Is it the last time the computer was restarted? Or is the last time a domain user logged on to it? Or is it the last time a service running under the System account started? Or... ?

I've noticed that WS12 and W8 VMs in my virtual lab keep refreshing their LastLogon property approximately every 15 minutes or so. I wonder why.

A related question is, Since it appears that LastLogon is not the time of the last reboot, is there another property for that purpose? I mean a property of a computer object in AD DS that stores either the last reboot time or other info from which the last reboot time could be easily derived. I know this info is available through WMI and is also burried in domain controllers' security logs. But it'd be better if there were something more straightforward, something similar to the LastLogon property as it's done for users.

Hi, I am trying to set up a simple network but seem to be falling flat on my face. All I want to do is use my pc as a server/workstation running server 2012 and create upto 5 virtual pcs which I could then use to simulate a real live network, ie make it look as if my server is really connected to 5 pcs just so I can learn how to create users and how settings affect users and deploying printers etc is this possible ?

File Classification Infrastructure: Adding Classification tab to Win7

$

I'm working on setting up Dynamic Access Controls with WS2012 to support Win7 and Win8 clients. There's a GPO setting for Win8 that enables users to see the Classification tab in Explorer, so they can change/view the classification of the resource. However, I need Win7 clients to have the same Classification tab. Since there's no GPO setting for Win7, what other options do I have?

Snapshot PDC

I am interested in the new cloning/shapshot ability in Windows Server 2012. From a blog I have read that one of the requirements is:

  • The PDC emulator role holder must be online and available to the cloned DC and must be running Windows Server 2012.

Are you able to snapshot the domain controller that is the PDC and holds all of the roles and there are other DCs as well?

After signing one of my dns zones using DNSSEC, globalnames stopped working. Is global names supported in a DNSSEC environment in Windows Server 2012?

I know officially it was not supported in 2008R2.
