MOSS 2007 and WINDOWS 2012 Domain Controller ??

Hi,

I saw on : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh994618.aspx#BKMK_AppCompat that MOSS 2007 can not be install on Windows 2012 server.

We have planned to upgrade ours Domains controlers to Windows 2012 (fonctionnal level will stay in "windows server 2008") and servers you hosting MOSS 2007 will stay on Windows 2008.

Did you know if having windows 2012 DC (2008 fonctional level) can have an impact on our exsiting MOSS2007 farm.

Thank you

The C++ test program could call my COM object but no problem, the Termianl service channel opened.

Any idea?

Windows Server 2012: DNS servers on Ethernet should include the loopback address, but not as the first entry.

Hello MS Community,

I've recently upgraded one my test machines to Windows Server 2012. Currently, it's configured as a Domain controller. After setting things up, I ran a BPA scan to see what needed to be addressed. Out of the three roles that are installed, I have one BPA error that is confusing. I have the DC IP set as the preferred DNS server, with my secondary DNS server set next. With this configuration, I get the following error:

DNS servers on Ethernet should include the loopback address, but not as the first entry.

If I follow suggested solution to the problem and move the primary DC IP to the second position, it throws 10 BPA errors in the AD DS Role.

My question is, Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

Thanks to all that reply,

Mike

¿How to cache internet content using Windows Server 2012? TMG not compatible

Hi,

I am surprised because TMG 2010 is not compatible with Windows Server 2012, and there is no other product to replace it.

So, I want to cache internet content in a Windows Server 2012 to accelerate the response time of the queries of the client machines in the internal network to the internet, namely cache http queries

Before it was so easy to do it, using Windows Server 2008 and TMG (or even ISA Server), but now, ¿someone knows any Microsoft product to cache internet content? or ¿how to create a web proxy service in windows server 2012?

Thanks

File permission report by user/group?

Is there a way in Windows Server 2012 to track down which group and/or user accounts are assigned which permissions to which files and folders. Because mysterious things do happen to our file/folder permissions, and because we regularly discover people/groups have access they shouldn’t have.

I know there is a utility called "ADManager Plus" but, I was hoping that Windows Server 2012 would accommodate this report for us.

Thank you.

Dynamic memory allocation not working for guests

I currently have a test guest with Server 2012 standard installed. This VM guest is configured in the following manner: pagefile is turned off, dynamic RAM is set to startup at 1024MB with a max setting of 8192MB. The VM uses 1093MB with 8 items open. I receive the following warning:

The question is this: If dynamic memory is functioning correctly why do I receive this messge? Further I have also received critical event id 41 relating to unexpected shut down/server restarts. I suspect that this issue is also related to the mishandling of dynamic memory allocation. I can run the same configuration in Windows 2008 R2 without issue. No warnings, no critical events. Anyone know of any bugs relating to Hyper-V 3.0/Server 2012 issues for dynamic memory? I'm hoping there is a hot fix available. Thanks in advance.

I pulled this error message off of one of the Hyper-V hosts in the cluster:

'ServerGuest' has encountered a fatal error.  The guest operating system reported that it failed with the following error codes: ErrorCode0: 0x3B, ErrorCode1: 0xC0000005, ErrorCode2: 0xA6AC5B3A, ErrorCode3: 0x52B6D30, ErrorCode4: 0x0.  If the problem persists, contact Product Support for the guest operating system. (Got a laugh out of this) (Virtual machine ID 9BF6EB97-FE08-4DE1-A394-FA5F01B593B8)

Windows successfully diagnosed a low virtual memory condition. The following programs consumed the most virtual memory: ServerManager.exe (3056) consumed 110895104 bytes, mmc.exe (3068) consumed 101089280 bytes, and mmc.exe (3212) consumed 62267392 bytes.

Error converting Server 2012 Core to "Minimal Server Interface"

I have the final RTM bits for Windows Server 2012 via Volume Licensing so this is not a beta or RC build.  I have a VM with Standard Server and nothing else but what is pushed by WSUS.  For troubleshooting I have even removed Antivirus software.  The problem that I am having is when I run the PowerShell command

install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra -Restart

What happens is the task completes successfully and reboots.  During boot up the OS goes through the % installing bit and when it gets to 100% it shows me the following error message "Failure Configuring Windows Features Reverting Changes" and removes the GUI that I had just installed.  I never get to a login screen or anything until it reboots again and completes reverting the changes.  To troubleshoot I have done the -source parameter where I specified the install media directly that I used for building this machine with no difference.

I have completed this PowerShell command successfully on another VM, no problem.  Another related problem is that I am having difficulty managing this server remotely since the server seems to be refusing connections even though I set it up properly (I believe) for remote management.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mark Ringo

Storage Spaces: Virtual Disk taken offline during file copy, marked as "This disk is offline because it is out of capacity", but plenty of free space

$

Server 2012 RC. I'm using Storage Spaces, with two virtual disks across 23 underlying physical disks.

* First virtual disk is fixed provisioning, parity across 23 physical disks: 10,024GB capacity
* Second virtual disk is fixed provisioning, parity across the remaining space on 6 of the same physical disks: 652GB capacity

These have been configured as dynamic disks, with an NTFS volume spanned across the two (larger virtual disk first). Total volume size 10,676GB. For more details of the hardware, and why the configuration is like this, see: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserver8gen/thread/c35ff156-01a8-456a-9190-04c7bcfc048e

I'm copying several TB from a network share to this volume. It is very slow at ~12MB/sec, but works. However, three times so far, several hours in to the file copy and with plenty of free space remaining, the 10,024GB virtual disk is suddenly taken offline. This obviously then fails the spanned volume and stops the file copy.

The second time, I took screenshots, below. The disk (Disk27) is marked offline due to "This disk is offline because it is out of capacity". And the disk in the spanned volume is marked as missing (which is what you would expect when one of its member disks is offline).

I can then mark the disk (Disk27) back online again, and this restores the spanned volume. I can then re-start the file copy from where it failed. There doesn't appear to be any data loss, but it does cause an outage that requires manual attention. As you can see, there is plenty of space left on the spanned volume.

Each time this has happened, there are a few event 150 errors in the System event log: "Disk 27 has reached a logical block provisioning permanent resource exhaustion condition.". Source: Disk.

  </Event>

This error seems to be related to thin provisioning of disks. I found this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh848068(v=vs.85).aspx. But both these Virtual Disks are configured as Fixed, not Thin provisioning, so it shouldn't apply.

My thoughts: the virtual disk should not spuriously go offline during a file copy, even if it was out of space. And in any case, there is plenty of free space remaining. Also, I don't understand the reason for why it is marked as offline ("This disk is offline because it is out of capacity"). Why would a disk go offline because it was out of thin capacity, rather than just returning an "out of disk space" error while keeping it online.

How do you change network location type on Server 2012?

Within Network & Sharing Center there appears to be no options available to change a network type as you could do in Server 2012?

Within Network List Manager policies everything is set to "not configured" so this should not be disabling any functionality.

Thanks.

How to configure UTF8 encoding for NFS server

$

I have NFS v3 clients that requires filenames to be UTF8 encoded.

I read that W2K12 supports NFS v4.1 and UTF8.

I upgraded my W2K8R2 server to W2K12.

I do not see any options for configuring UTF8 character encoding in the UI or in the NFS powershell commands.

How do I configure a NFS share to use UTF8 character encoding?

DFSN-Server ID 516 Flooding Event Log

$

Good Day,

Since setting up a Server 2012 server as a DFS root the Administrative Events log is getting flooded with DFSN-Server ID 516 warning events. We have multiple name spaces and we get a message for each every 15 minutes, so for our 6 name spaces that is over 500 messages a day.

DFSN service has started performing complete refresh of metadata for namespace <DFS-Root>. This task can take time if the namespace has large number of folders and may delay namespace administration operations.

Although I found one solution on the Russian Technet forum DFSN-Server EventID 516 this disables the entire DFSN-Server Admin log, so if there are any problems with the refresh they will not appear.

The main cause of the problem appears to be that the 516 Events have a Warning level 3 for something that should be Information level 4. There is no reason for a warning to be issued for what is a regular update process.

Thanks,

James

Very bad network performance of guest services behind a host NAT - Fix: Wireshark driver?!

$

Hello everybody,

since some days - as you can see if you look up my other threads - I'm struggling with a Windows Server 2012 which should act as Hyper-V host for few guest systems.

As using one guest system as (Vyatta) router for the others didn't work due to heavy network performance and even connectivity problems, I now configured the host to route and nat to each virtual machine directly. That seemed to work at least for downloads in the guest.

But now I configured the first HTTP (IIS 8) server in one guest and created a corresponding NAT rule on the host. And accessing this guest's website from the outside had terrible performance (more than 20 KB/s were not possible - and the server is on a 100 Mbit/s full duplex port). So I set up the exact same test page with the exact same IIS 8 configuration on the host system and this one I could access with constantly over 11 MB/s from the outside, which is very acceptable for a 100 Mbit connection I think. That must mean, that there is no problem with my connection but with the Windows NAT...

Next I monitored the bad connection to the guest system with wireshark on my client computer. And - who would have guessed - it was full of lost segments, duplicated ACKs and resulting retransmissions. "Normal" packages were quasi non existent.

In the next step I installed Wireshark on the Windows Server host, too, as I wanted to try to see were porblem lies. To my really big surprise I couldn't see any problem and when I looked at the transmission speed it was the same the test page on the host reached (again over 11 MB/s). But as soon as I stopped the capture the speed droped drastically to again only few KB/s. This should not be so unusual as from my understanding the Wireshark driver is as if it wouldn't exist as long as nothing is captured and just hooks into the system as soon as a capture is started.

But why on earth should the wireshark driver fix this NAT problems Windows seems to have in my case??

I also found out that it only "works" if I capture the interface of the virtual switch the guest in question is a part of. If I capture any other interfaces (virtual or the actual hardware interface) it doesn't change anything.

It also works if I set up a capture filter for a non existent host, so that no packeges at all get captured. This way I can configure a wireshark upstart job as workaround without the risk of high resource utilization.

Anyhow, I don't think this should be a permanent solution. So any ideas what's happening and how I could fix this the right way?
(In an onther thread someone stated my problems could be caused by a poor NIC, which really is a very cheap Realtec PCIe adapter with an up to date driver from 2012/11/23. But I don't really think the hardware is doing a bad job and I think Windows should be able to work with it. After all it does as long as there is no NAT and even with NAT it does when Wireshark is hooked in...)

Thanks for any infos and tips!

Best regards from Germany,

Sarru

Windows Management Framework (WMF) 3.0 on Windows Small Business Server 2011

Hello,

We have install a Windows Server 2012  in a Windows Small Business Server 2011 (dutch version) network. I have setup the Windows Server 2012 as a RD-session server. Only I cannot connect with the server console with the SBS server, so it is not possible to select the RD-gateway services on the SBS server. I get a message that WinRM 3.0-service is not installed. I have search, but WinRM 3.0 is not installed on the SBS server.  When is Windows Management Framework 3.0 available for Windows Small Business Server 2011?

I have see that the Windows Server 2008 (R2) version is always available:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=34595

Maybe is it possible to install the Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 version. Maybe someone here have experience with.

Nico Hendriks
